Scottish Arts

As well as being a country steeped in history and heritage, Scotland also has a vibrant arts, culture and entertainment scene. From world-famous actors and musicians to world-class artists and writers, Scotland is a small nation brimming with talent. Our long and exciting history also means we offer some of the world’s best museums and galleries, with many of them free to enter.

Music is ingrained within the history of Scotland. Some of the world’s most popular modern music groups and artists hail from Scotland, including Belle & Sebastian, Snow Patrol and Susan Boyle. What’s more, our three internationally-renowned classical orchestras mean there’s no shortage of classical talent here either.

Scotland’s rich heritage in music and performance makes it the perfect place to enjoy theatre, dance and opera. A number of festivals every year, including the world-famous Festival Fringe and International Festivals, take place in Edinburgh during the summer, showcasing both established and emerging talents from across the globe.

Scotland is also a major player in the film industry. We might not have much in common with Hollywood, but perhaps that’s why our rolling hills and serene landscapes have proved so popular with film crews over the past decade. The booming Scottish film industry has attracted such stars as Brad Pitt, Scarlett Johansson and Daniel Craig to our shores.

We’re not short on stars in the world of fashion and design, either. World famous fashion designers, including Jonathan Saunders, Graeme Black, and Holly Fulton, to name just a few, are the finest of Scotland’s crop. On top of this, our internationally-renowned architects, such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh and William Henry Playfair, have played a large part in making Scottish cities as beautiful as they are today.
